The details
Every fact comes with what it means, so you don’t need to play to follow along.
What’s in the set
- Tiles
- 164
- American mahjong is played with 152 tiles. The other 12 are extras.
- Jokers
- Included
- Wild tiles that can stand in for others. American mahjong can’t be played without them.
- Blank tiles
- 2
- Plain spare tiles. Some groups use them in house-rule games.
- Flower tiles
- Numbered
- The 8 flower tiles have small numbers in the corner, which some players like for sorting.
How they look
- Back
- Blue, clear
- The side the other players see. See-through. It looks the same either way up, so a tile never shows upside down.
- Pictures
- Traditional
- The style of the pictures on the tiles. Classic pictures, close to the look of older tiles.
- Dragons
- No label
- Three kinds of dragon, one to go with each suit. No word is printed on them. The three are told apart by color.
- 1 Bam
- A bird
- The first bamboo tile. Most brands draw it as a bird.
- Build
- 2 layers
- Made of 2 layers bonded together, which shows as stripes along the side.
Size and weight
- One tile
- 1.13 × 0.88 × 0.5 in (29 × 22 × 13 mm)
- One tile, tall × wide × thick. Travel.
- Weight
- Not listed
- The brand doesn’t publish it. Owners can add theirs below.
